Our Mission: We Proclaim Jesus Christ, and Promote Communities of Joy, Hope, Love, and Peace.

"The mission of Jesus Christ is what matters most for the journey ahead."  -D&C 164:9f (2010)

Mission defines who we are.

More than just "missionary work," when we speak of mission in Community of Christ we are referring to creating a just and peaceful world - known traditionally in the Restoration as Zion.

Mission comes first and matters most.  Mission shapes our theology, our congregations, our priorities.  When we live out the mission of Christ, we are experiencing and sharing God's love.

Salvation Here & Now

While we have hope in the next life, in Community of Christ we are very interested in salvation here and now.  This was the message of Jesus: Repent, the kingdom of God is at hand!  Don't wait for God to radically alter unjust conditions, but join with God here and now to create communities that affirm the worth of all persons and sacredness of creation.

Doctrine & Covenants 163 proclaims:

The restoring of persons to healthy or righteous relationships with God, others, themselves, and the earth is at the heart of the purpose of your journey as a people of faith.

The hope of Zion is realized when the vision of Christ is embodied in communities of generosity, justice, and peacefulness.

Above all else, strive to be faithful to Christ’s vision of the peaceable Kingdom of God on earth. Courageously challenge cultural, political, and religious trends that are contrary to the reconciling and restoring purposes of God. Pursue peace.

God, the Eternal Creator, weeps for the poor, displaced, mistreated, and diseased of the world because of their unnecessary suffering. Such conditions are not God’s will. Open your ears to hear the pleading of mothers and fathers in all nations who desperately seek a future of hope for their children. Do not turn away from them. For in their welfare resides your welfare.

The Mission of Christ

In Luke 4:18–19, Jesus proclaimed his mission when he read from Isaiah:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Our Mission Initiatives

In Community of Christ, we have five Mission Initiatives, as our way of joining with God in the Mission of Christ:

Share the redeeming, liberating, and restoring message of the gospel

Abolish Poverty, End Suffering

Serve the poor and hungry, and stop conditions that diminish the worth of persons

Pursue Peace on Earth

Create Zion among individuals, communities, and nations

Develop Disciples to Serve

Continually grow as living expressions of Christ in the world

Experience Congregations in Mission

Engage together as a people led by the Spirit to transform the world

In April of 2011, from the Temple in Independence, the President of the Church Stephen M. Veazey gave this address entitled "Mission Matters Most!"
